Trauma Therapy in Fairfax, Virginia & Washington, DC
Trauma-informed therapy creates a nurturing space where you can explore your feelings, memories, and reactions in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. At Renew Art Therapy and Counseling, we approach trauma therapy with compassion, curiosity, and respect for your unique experiences.
Together, we work to help you feel more grounded, empowered, and connected to your inner resources as we navigate the challenges that trauma has brought into your life.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) for Trauma
One approach we may use in trauma therapy is Internal Family Systems (IFS). With IFS, we view your inner world as a community of different parts, each with its own thoughts, feelings, and roles.
Some parts may hold the pain and memories of trauma, while others may have developed protective roles to help you cope with difficult experiences. Through IFS, we gently explore these different parts with compassion and curiosity, honoring the ways they have helped you survive while creating space for healing.
Through this process, we aim to reconnect you with the core of who you are—the Self—a place within you associated with calm, compassion, clarity, and connection.
EMDR Therapy for Trauma
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is another approach that can support the healing of traumatic and distressing memories.
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as tapping, holding buzzers, or following the therapist's moving fingers with your eyes, to support the processing of memories, emotions, body sensations, and beliefs connected to difficult experiences.
Your therapist will guide you through the eight phases of EMDR at a pace that feels safe and manageable. Together, you may explore negative beliefs connected to a traumatic experience and work toward developing more compassionate and adaptive beliefs.
Before beginning trauma processing, your therapist will help you develop resources and grounding strategies you can use when difficult emotions or memories feel overwhelming. These may include imagining a “safe space,” using a “container” exercise, or practicing deep breathing.

A Compassionate Approach to Trauma Healing
Trauma-informed therapy is not about rushing to revisit painful memories or forcing yourself to go somewhere you are not ready to go. It is about creating a relationship and environment where you can feel safe enough to explore what you have experienced.
We honor your experiences and emotions with kindness and understanding, supporting you as you navigate the complexities of trauma and begin to reclaim your sense of wholeness and resilience.
Reaching out for therapy takes courage and you don’t have to navigate this journey alone. We are here to meet you where you are and walk alongside you, one step at a time.
