Frequently Asked Questions

About Therapy at Renew

  • What types of therapy does Renew Art Therapy and Counseling offer?

Renew Art Therapy and Counseling offers individual therapy for children, teens, and adults, as well as couples counseling. Our therapists also offer art therapy, play therapy, trauma therapy, and other creative and evidence-based therapeutic approaches.

We believe therapy is most meaningful when it is thoughtfully tailored to the individual. Our therapists draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches to create care that feels supportive, collaborative, and authentic.

  • How do I know if therapy is right for me?

You don't have to be in crisis or have everything figured out before beginning therapy. Sometimes you may simply feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or ready for something to change.

Therapy can provide a safe and supportive space to better understand what you are experiencing, develop coping strategies, work through challenges, and cultivate greater self-awareness and well-being.

  • What can I expect during my first therapy session?

Your first session is an opportunity for you and your therapist to begin getting to know one another and to talk about what brings you to therapy. Your therapist will work to understand your experiences, concerns, goals, and what you hope to gain from therapy.

Most importantly, we want you to feel comfortable and supported. Therapy is a collaborative process, and finding a therapist who feels like the right fit is an important part of beginning that process.

  • How do I choose the right therapist?

Finding the right therapist is a personal decision. We encourage you to explore our therapist profiles to learn more about each clinician's experience, areas of focus, and therapeutic approaches. Take your time, trust your instincts, and don't hesitate to reach out if you need guidance. We strongly advocate for finding the right fit, and we are here to support you in helping to make that connection.

We offer complimentary consultations for new clients. This gives you an opportunity to share what you are looking for, ask questions, and help us understand your needs so we can connect you with a therapist who may be a good fit.

Child Therapy

  • What age children do you work with?

Our therapists work with children, teens, and adults, with each therapist's age range and areas of focus varying based on their training and experience.

For children, we use developmentally appropriate approaches that allow them to communicate and process their experiences in ways that feel natural to them. Play therapy and art therapy may be incorporated when appropriate.

To learn more, visit our Child Therapy page.

  • What is play therapy?

Play is an essential part of human growth. Through play we learn, experiment, resolve inner conflicts, and cultivate relationships.

Play therapy creates a safe and nurturing environment where children can communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a language they understand best: play. It is a form of treatment that helps children better process their experiences and develop more effective strategies for managing their world.

Play therapy is suitable for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years old.

Teen Therapy

  • How do I know if my teen may benefit from therapy?

Teenagers navigate a unique stage of development as they begin forming their identities, becoming more independent, and navigating relationships, school, family, and changing expectations.

Therapy may be helpful when a teen is experiencing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, grief, trauma, relationship challenges, identity concerns, behavioral concerns, or significant life changes. It can also provide a supportive space when a teen simply feels overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of what comes next.

  • What does teen therapy look like?

There is no single way that teen therapy needs to look. Some teens connect through conversation, while others may find it easier to express themselves through art, creative expression, mindfulness, or other approaches.

We meet teens where they are and work collaboratively to create a therapeutic relationship where they can feel safe enough to be honest, explore difficult emotions, and develop greater self-understanding.

  • Will parents be involved in their teen's therapy?

Parents and caregivers are an important part of a teen's support system. At the same time, we recognize that teenagers are developing their own independence and need a therapeutic space where they can have a voice.

When appropriate, we collaborate with parents and caregivers to strengthen communication, understanding, and connection at home while respecting the teen's individual therapeutic experience.

The specific nature of parent involvement will depend on the teen's age, needs, treatment, and clinical circumstances.

Adult Therapy

  • What can adult therapy help with?

Adult therapy can provide support for a wide range of experiences and concerns, including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma, grief and loss, life transitions, ADHD, neurodiversity, self-esteem, relationship concerns, disordered eating, and other mental health and emotional challenges.

Therapy can also be helpful when you are seeking greater self-awareness, understanding, or personal growth.

Art Therapy

  • What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of therapy that incorporates creative expression into the therapeutic process. Art can offer another way to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences that may be difficult to express through words alone.

At Renew, art therapy is approached as a flexible and individualized therapeutic experience. There is no expectation that you need to be an artist or create something “good.” The focus is on the process of exploration and self-expression.

    Learn more about Art Therapy.

  • Do I need to be good at art to participate in art therapy?

No. You do not need to have any previous art experience or consider yourself artistic to participate in art therapy.

Art therapy is not about creating something perfect or producing a finished work of art. Instead, creative expression can provide another pathway for exploring emotions, experiences, relationships, and parts of yourself that may be difficult to put into words.

  • Do I have to make art in an art therapy therapy session?

No, you are not required to make art while working with an art therapist. Creative expression can take many different forms, and we will work with you to find what feels most safe and effective.
