Teen Therapy & Counseling in fairfax, Virginia
A space where teens can feel understood, supported, and truly themselves
Being a teenager can be complicated. There is pressure to figure out who you are while navigating friendships, school, family relationships, changing expectations, and a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming.
At Renew Art Therapy and Counseling, we offer a warm, supportive space where teens can slow down, feel understood, and explore what they are experiencing without judgment.
We believe therapy with teenagers is about more than managing symptoms. It is an opportunity to better understand yourself, build confidence, develop healthy ways of coping, and feel more connected to the people and things that matter.
Therapy for Teens, On Their Terms
Teenagers are developing their own identities, perspectives, and voices. We believe it is important to approach therapy with curiosity, respect, and an understanding of where each teen is in their development.
We don't believe there is one right way to do therapy.
Some teens may find comfort in talking, while others connect through art, creative expression, mindfulness, or other expressive approaches. We meet teens where they are and work collaboratively to find approaches that feel natural and meaningful to them.
Our goal is to create a therapeutic relationship where teens feel safe enough to be honest, explore difficult emotions, ask questions, and discover more about themselves.
How Can Teen Therapy Help?
Teen therapy can offer support when life begins to feel difficult to manage or when a teen feels stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of what comes next.
We support teens navigating concerns such as:
Anxiety, worry, and overthinking
Depression and low mood
ADHD and neurodiversity
Self-esteem and self-confidence
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
Trauma and difficult experiences
Grief and loss
Life transitions and adjustment
Friendship and relationship concerns
Family conflict and communication challenges
Identity exploration
LGBTQIA+ concerns
Racial identity and cultural identity
Disordered eating and body image concerns
Behavioral concerns
School stress and academic pressure
Sometimes there isn't one obvious reason a teen is struggling. You may simply notice that they seem different—more withdrawn, irritable, anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected than they used to be.
You don't have to know exactly what is wrong before reaching out. Therapy can be a place to begin making sense of what is happening.
Creative Therapy for Teens
At Renew, creativity is an important part of how we work.
Art and creative expression can offer teens another way to explore thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to put into words. There is no need to be “good at art,” and there is no expectation to create something perfect.
The focus is on the process, not the product.
Depending on the teen and their needs, therapy may incorporate art therapy, expressive arts, mindfulness, sand tray therapy, talk therapy, or other approaches.
Creative therapy can give teens space to slow down, reflect, and connect with parts of themselves that may be difficult to access through conversation alone.
Supporting the Whole Family
A teenager's struggles don't happen in isolation. School, friendships, family relationships, social media, identity, expectations, and major life changes can all shape how a teen experiences themselves and the world around them.
We believe that supporting a teenager also means supporting the relationships around them.
At the same time, we respect that teens are developing their own independence. We want them to have a voice in their therapy and to feel that the space belongs to them.
Parents and caregivers remain an important part of the picture. When appropriate, we collaborate with parents and caregivers to help strengthen communication, understanding, and connection at home.
We also understand that parenting a teenager can bring its own questions: How much should I step in? When should I give space? How do I help without making things worse?
Therapy can provide support for parents, too, including resources and practical tools for navigating this stage of development.
A Place to Be Yourself
Therapy doesn't have to be another place where a teen feels like they are being told what to do or who they should be.
Instead, we hope therapy can become a place where they can take a breath, be honest, explore who they are, and feel genuinely seen.
Our role is not to have all the answers for them. It is to walk alongside them as they develop the insight, confidence, coping skills, and self-understanding they need to navigate this chapter of their lives.
