MINDY VAN WART, MA : PROVISIONAL ART THERAPIST & RESIDENT IN COUNSELING
My name is Mindy (she/her), and I am a Resident in Counseling and a Provisional Art Therapist. I am trained in trauma informed art therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and sand tray therapy. My approach as a therapist is also strongly influenced by the principles of person-centered, existential, and mindfulness-based therapies. I love offering clients creative ways to express their inner reality. When we use the languages of color, shape, and texture alongside words, we gain two powerful benefits: internally, we engage more areas of our brains and bodies, and externally, we create additional pathways for authentic self-expression.
So many experiences in life can disconnect us from our hearts, feelings, desires, and truth. In therapy, I hope to provide a safe, supportive relationship that empowers clients to reconnect with what is trustworthy and true within themselves. Walking alongside people in a way that helps them feel seen, validated, and celebrated is what drew me to this work.
My areas of specialization include grief and loss, codependency, religious trauma, anxiety, relationship challenges, and career or life transitions. A word about grief—whether it's the loss of a loved one, a pet, a dream, or a sense of identity, any loss that matters to you matters to me. I would be honored to walk with you on your grief journey.
My story
At 18, I never could have predicted that I would go back to school 20 years later to become an art therapist. My mind and goals were elsewhere, yet the raw materials—sensitivity, introspection, creativity, and curiosity about people and relationships—had been part of me all along.
As a young adult, when I found myself struggling emotionally and relationally, a few pivotal experiences changed my path. In personal growth workshops, I witnessed the power of experiential therapy, and at retreats, I discovered how art-making can open new doors to self-discovery. The seeds of a new dream were planted in my heart.
Today, I am deeply grateful to be working, learning, and serving at the intersection of creativity and therapy.
